Sullivan Continues Calls to “Read the Bill”

Washington, Oct 19 - Today, Congressman Sullivan continued his push for transparency and accountability in government by cosponsoring a resolution that will allow the American public to read bills online within 24 hours after committee votes.  Specifically, H.Res.835 would change House rules to require committees to post the actual text of adopted bills and amendments online within 24 hours.  This action comes following the revelation that Senate Democrats worked behind closed door to make over 70 changes to the text of the healthcare bill that was recently passed in the Senate Health, Education, Labor & Pensions (HELP) Committee.

“Working behind closed doors and behind the backs of the American people has become a staple of this Democrat led Congress – and its unacceptable.  The Democrat leadership knows the American people aren’t buying the so called healthcare reform they are selling, so they are doing everything they can to keep the public in the dark.   As support dwindles for their government takeover of our healthcare system, the Democrat leadership is resorting to making secret, radical changes to their bill without a vote and  behind the backs of the American people they represent. The public has a right to know what is in the bills we are asked to vote on, and I will continue fighting to ensure that is the case.

Congressman Sullivan is also a proud cosponsor of H.Res 554.  This “Read the Bill” legislation would require the House Majority to give Members of Congress, and the American public, 72 hours to review legislation before it is brought up for a vote in the House of Representatives.
